Toronto condo window covering projects have their own challenges that do not apply to detached homes. After thousands of installations across the GTA — from Liberty Village studios to Yorkville penthouses to North York high-rises — here is what works.
The Floor-to-Ceiling Window Challenge
Most Toronto condos built after 2000 have floor-to-ceiling glass on at least one wall. These windows create real problems: morning sun that wakes you at 5am in summer, afternoon west-facing glare, and privacy concerns in buildings where you are at eye level with neighbouring towers.
Zebra blinds with motorized option: Clean profile, full privacy when needed, minimal visual interruption when raised. Motorized operation is particularly valuable for floor-to-ceiling windows — manually operating a 9-foot blind is awkward.
Solar roller blinds: For walls that face east or south and receive direct morning sun, a solar roller blind (3-5% openness factor) cuts glare without darkening the room. The most popular daytime solution for condo living areas.
Dual roller (sheer over blackout): Two rollers on the same headrail — a sheer for daytime and a blackout for sleeping in. The most functional bedroom window covering solution for condos with significant light exposure.
Mounting in Concrete
Most Toronto condo buildings are concrete construction, which means standard drywall anchors do not work for window covering brackets. Concrete anchors require a hammer drill and the right anchor type for the concrete density — something we handle on every installation. Many condo buildings also require inside-mount installation to preserve the exterior appearance standard. We check your building rules during the consultation and recommend mounting configurations accordingly.
Privacy Without Blackout
Sheer roller blinds: Block the direct view in during the day because the interior is brighter than the exterior, while maintaining your view out. At night this reverses — you need something opaque for evening privacy.
Zebra blinds halfway: When the sheer and opaque stripes partially overlap you get diffused light and significant privacy — not blackout, but visually obscured from a reasonable distance outside.
Building Approval
Many Toronto condo corporations require white or off-white liners that present a uniform appearance from outside. This is almost never an obstacle — most quality roller and zebra blind fabrics come with a standard white backing. We confirm your building requirements before ordering and ensure every installation is compliant.
