Zebra blinds — also called dual blinds, day-night blinds, or vision blinds — have become one of the most popular window covering choices in Toronto condos and homes over the past decade. Here is what they are and whether they are right for your space.
How Zebra Blinds Work
A zebra blind has two layers of fabric wound around a single roller tube. Each layer alternates between sheer horizontal stripes and opaque horizontal stripes. When sheer aligns with sheer, you get filtered light and a diffused view through the window. When opaque aligns with opaque, the window is blocked. Anywhere between those two positions gives a graduated mix of light and privacy — controlled by a single smooth pull or a motor.
Why They Are So Popular in Toronto
Condos with floor-to-ceiling glass: The minimal profile suits modern condo interiors. The fabric rolls fully out of sight when raised, leaving just a thin cassette at the top of the window.
Semi-detached and townhouse living rooms: Privacy from the street matters, but so does natural light. Zebra blinds give you maximum light in the morning and full privacy in the evening with one smooth adjustment.
Rental properties: Durable, easy to operate, and sharp-looking. The most common upgrade we see landlords make during a unit turnover.
Fabric Options
Standard polyester fabrics: Easy to clean, resistant to fading, available in dozens of colours and neutrals.
Blackout zebra blinds: The opaque stripes are a true blackout fabric. Near-complete light elimination when aligned, with the sheer stripes remaining sheer for daytime use.
Linen-look fabrics: A woven texture that reads as more natural and warm. Popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
Motorized zebra blinds: Our most popular motorized blind type. The smooth continuous operation is ideal for large windows and smart home integration.
What They Cost
Custom zebra blinds start at around $120-200 per window for a standard residential window (approximately 36 by 60 inches) including measuring, fabrication, and professional installation. Floor-to-ceiling and motorized versions are priced higher depending on size and motor type. We provide same-day itemised quotes during our free Shop at Home visit.
